WE had a rollercoaster teaching our first 'investigator' Giovanni. We were also pretty competative with the other missionaries, which is not productive. WE really worked on building a personal relationshop with him as the main thing to learn here is to 'teach the person not the lesson'. By the end he accepted baptism if we kept teaching him. We have two new 'investigatiors' now. Our teacher Irmao Barlow is acting as one of the people he taught called Abrao, who is newly married. It was one of the best lessons we have given even though it was short (kept it to the 20 minutes like we're meant to). We asked him a lot about his life, including being prompted to ask how he met his wife, which was a nice personal question. Then asked about his religious background and what he had heard about the church. Then we shared 2 Nephi 25:26 'we preach of Christ'... which really demonstrated how the Book of Mormon shares our purpose as missionaries. He wa ssuper receptive and when we talked about the end of the verse ' so that they will know who to look to for a remission of their sins' we talked about how we can do that through baptism. He aceepted baptism right there and then!! (we're encouraged to invite early).
The same person who played Giovanni is our other teacher now and he is being Paulo for us. We had an ok informal opening and shared the scripture in John about 'my peace I leave with you' with him at the door to create a reason he would want to invite us in. WE were a little scattered in knowing who was saying what (we went first, so didn't have much time to prepare) but I shared a personal experience of how the Book of Mormon had brought me peace in my life. So when I was preparing to run the duathlon at mildenhall once I really didn't want to because I thought I'd do badly. Then I read Ether 12:27 about God making our weaknesses strengths. I felt prompted to ask if he had weaknesses in his life. He said yes. I've also learnt the rule of 'digging a little deeper' so asked 'what?' and he opened up about smoking and how he had been tyring to quit and it was tearing his family apart because they didn't have enough money. I wa so moved I was crying because all the last time we had been trying to hit upon something this particular and yet this time we had got to it straight away. The teacher even said it had been the perfect scripture for that investigator afterwards.
So we are learning to live by the spirit. All of Ether 12 is worth a good look, especially froma missionary trying to learn a new language perspective. It talks about Moroni feeling weak in writing and worried that people will laugh at his words and it is just so pertinent for us. Still, we know thjat God will make up the difference.
Last week we went to the Provo temple of PDAY as a district and most of the zone. It was one of the most powerful experiences I have had. When we were in the celestial room together I could literally feel the spirit burning like fire in my chest, so happy was I to be amongst such a unity. It is awesome how everyone makes the effort to do things together as a zone and is there for each other. We have set the goal as a district todo district prayer togetehr night and morning, share a spiritual thought in the morning and practise verbs together for 1/2 and hour before bed.
Tonight is a devotional and there is an apostle coming!!!!! We have to wait and see who it is though. Exciting times xx
